What is Flexible Veneer? |
| Flexible veneer is real wood sliced very thin
and permanently bonded to a paper backing. The backing
is most often available in a 10 mil thickness, however 20 mil and thicker is
sometimes used on surfaces that are not perfectly smooth. One mil equals
1/1000 Please note that the mil thickness only refers to the
thickness of the paper backing, not the real wood veneer face. |

What is a PSA veneer? |
| Pressure Sensitive Adhesive backed veneer
commonly known as PSA veneer is a paper-backed product that offers a
simple alternative for applying veneer without having to use any
standard adhesives. A special adhesive developed by 3M™ is applied
to the paper-backed veneer and then covered with a protective backing.
The protective backing is removed just prior to bonding the veneer to
it's substrate. PSA veneer is very easy to use; it can be cut and
trimmed with simple tools such as scissors or a razor type knife and is
a perfect choice for re-facing many items such as kitchen cabinets,
stereo speakers, and much more. |

| What is 2-Ply Veneer? |
| What is 2-ply veneer?
This veneer is manufactured by
laminating two wood veneers together and has a thickness of .040
(about 1/25") plus or minus .005. The face veneer grain runs 90
degrees to the cross banding (backing veneer) which provides stability
and protection against bubbling that may occur if the veneer is not
properly bonded to it's substrate. 2-ply veneer can bend around
moderate curves in both directions. This type of veneer is very
stable due to its cross grain ply construction and is often chosen when
applying burls or other highly figured veneers because of the additional
wood movement in these veneers. 2- ply veneer is also a good
choice when veneering surfaces that may not be completely smooth because
it is thicker than 10 mil flexible veneer, slight bumps or uneven
surfaces are less likely to telegraph through the veneer and be
visible. Unlike some other 2-ply veneers, our product contains a
thin acrylic membrane to provide protection against bubbling, glue
seepage. |

| What is
3-Ply NBL™ Veneer? |
| What is 3-ply NBL® veneer?
This veneer is manufactured by
laminating three wood veneers together and has a thickness of .040
(about 1/25") plus or minus .005. NBL®’s patented 3-ply
construction of parallel grains provide the custom woodworker with
superior flexibility and performance when compared to other wood-backed
products. Balanced construction (for both flat and curved surfaces) produces an extremely pliable
laminate and moisture-resistant sheet
without the black edge associated with phenolic and foil backers. Minor
substrate imperfections are "absorbed" and hidden by NBL®’s thermo-set
joined face and parallel grain, all-wood-backer. Ease of application make NBL® wood-on-wood laminate the
proven choice for trouble-free project. |

What materials can I apply
flexible veneer
to? |
| Paper-backed veneer can be applied to many
materials, but it's best applied to including MDF (medium density
fiberboard), cabinet grade plywood and particleboard. It may also be
applied to masonite™,
melamine. and solid wood It is very important to research exactly
what type of adhesive to use on the former materials, prior to
application. Paper-backed veneer may also be applied to drywall,
however the veneer must be bonded to a
substrate such as MDF and then installed over the drywall. Installation
over a fire-retardant agent is not recommended. |

My veneer is not the same color as the picture on your site, why? |
| All our veneers are made
from real wood, therefore variations in color will occur from sheet to
sheet. When ordering multiple sheets we, do our best to insure
consistent color throughout the sheets. however we are dealing with
mother nature and cannot guarantee the same consistency in color that
you would find when purchasing composite sheet material such as plastic
laminate. In addition, no two computers monitors will show colors
identically, therefore pictures of some species will appear different on
your computer screen or printer than what the veneer actually looks
like. |

What are the different
cuts of veneer available?- Any veneer on our site that is
not labeled with a cut is flat cut. |
Flat
Cut/Plain Sliced:
The half log, or flitch, is mounted with the heart
side flat against the flitch table of the slicer and the slicing is done
parallel to a line through the center of the log. Cathedral and straight
grain patterns result. |
| |
Quarter
Sawn:
The quarter log is mounted on the flitch table so
that the growth rings of the log strike the knife at approximately right
angles, producing a series of stripes. These stripes vary in width from
species to species. A natural distribution of ray flake is a
characteristic of this cut in red and white oak. |
| |
Rift
Sawn:
The cut slices slightly across the medullary rays,
accentuating the vertical grain and minimizing the flake. Rift grain is
restricted to red and white oak. |
| |
Rotary-Spliced:
This rotary cut allows for splice lines within the
sheet of veneer. |
| |
| Birdseye: Refers to the
small to large "eyes" of figure found throughout select sheets of Maple. |
| |
| Burls: Burls feature
swirling grain around clusters of dormant buds, rings or eyes. Available
in White Ash, Olive Ash, Carpathian Elm, Maple, Mappa, Myrtle and
Walnut. |
| |
| Curly: Contortions in
grain direction that reflect light differently create an appearance of
undulating waves known as curly grain. Most commonly available in Maple |
| |
| Flake: Varies in size
from "dash marks" to "stretch marks." Created when the pithrays are cut
across at an angle when slicing. Very common in Quartered Red and White
Oak. |
| |
| Pebble: "Snowflake" or
"button" look that occurs when large medullary rays are quartersawn.
Very common in Quartered Lacewood. |
| |
| Pommele: A dense
pattern of small rings enveloping one another. Often described as
looking like "suede" or "fur." Most commonly available as Sapele. |
